Project 1 : Procurement method

The practice of architecture is intertwined with the procurement method or building delivery system within the building industry, whether it is a local or international development. The architects in practice need to familiarise themselves with the various building delivery systems as well as the contract types used in the delivery of buildings.

 

Form a group with 3-4 students. The group is to interview several architectural firms on their 
experiences in the two building procurement methods (i.e. i. traditional and ii. design & build) 
and the contract that was used. Obtain information on the following:
For each project or building studied, basic information such as the following, are needed:
1. Brief information on the practice.
2. Background of the project, if possible, plans, drawings and/or images of the project.
3. Size of project in terms of built-up area (approximate), number of storey height etc.
4. Approximate cost and completion date.
5. Building type or function and if possible, brief building program.

6. Type of client, private or public (government etc.) and if possible, who they are.
7. Any other information deemed useful to describe the building/project.
Understand the aspects of the two procurement methods and contracts:
1. Similarities and/or differences between the 2 methods (chose 4 aspects for your report)
2. The role and responsibilities of the architect in both procurement methods (chose 2 aspects 
for your report)
3. Organisational relationship between the architect, client and the contractor & subcontractors
