Project 2 : Tropical High Rise Dwelling
Based on the preliminary findings and positioning in Component 1, students are to deepen their theoretical understanding of the subject matter through engagement with the reading material as well as in-class discussions in order to arrive at a clear set of individual Design Intentions to guide their architectural exploration.
Component 2A is an individual component to prepare:
i. Theoretical foundation for the student’s line of inquiry in developing a design for TROPICAL HIGHRISE DWELLING.
ii. A clear design intention which would then be developed into an architectural scheme.
Learning Outcome of Component 2A
On completion of Component 2A a student will be able to:
- Produce a written design statement that shows critical engagement with relevant architectural theories that inform and support an architectural design for this studio;
- Communicate research and design ideas effectively
This component is the culmination of the semester’s inquiry into the theme of theme of TROPICAL HIGHRISE DWELLING. Based on the findings and supported by in class discussions on literature and architectural explorations, students are to develop individual projects that address the possibilities of TROPICAL HIGHRISE DWELLING. This will be an architecture that adds value to the existing community and mediates between the notion of progress and of retaining the uniqueness of a place amidst the evolving challenges of the contemporary city.

- Develop a cohesive and unified architectural design by applying research knowledge to the design process;

Reflection
A design must be an inclusive process that calls for tackling a myriad of issues with an ingenious solution. The design process should never be done with a tunnel vision whereby one issue is tackled at a time, but a wholesome process that takes everything into consideration. For example, when one is planning the spaces, the materiality, elevation, openings, programmatic implementations and other factors must be consistent and thoughtfully designed together along the way.
