Project 2 : An experiement
Where Assignment 1A was an attempt to adapt literature into graphics/visual expression of the city, and Assignment 1B was an attempt to “see” the ordinary city in an extraordinary or unique way; Assignment 2 is a synthesis of the surrealism and imaginary in Assignment 1A, and the realism and physical fabric of the urban conditions in Assignment 1B. This assignment stretches further the idea of ‘adaptation’ in the style of how a film maker would overlay an imaginary (utopian/dystopian) city into the real space. In brief, this assignment is about the exploration of an adaptive process between the imaginary and the real, the non-physical and the physical.
For this assignment, students were tasked to translate and adapt the essence of “Invisible Cities” into the greater context of the city of Kuala Lumpur. Based on Assignment 1, we were tasked to identify the issue that contributes to the significant characteristics of the city as narrated by Calvino. After that, we were to structure a storyboard proposal of how the city changes through time if the issue is unresolved. the predicted situation must be in 25 years, 50 years and 100 years from our present time. We also were assigned to produce a 250 words post-production text to explain the elements translated in the short and why it is appropriate or relevant with accurate references and citations.
